Limited Obstetric Ultrasounds
If you have received positive results from a pregnancy testing appointment at Northfield Women’s Center, your next step is to have an ultrasound performed by our Registered Diagnostic Sonographer. We provide our ultrasounds completely free of charge, in a professional and caring environment.
What Do Ultrasounds Do?
Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to detect and project an image of the inside of the uterus. It is a painless and routine procedure to confirm a pregnancy and provides valuable information to both the woman and the sonographer about the viability and health of the fetus.
Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
As mentioned above, an ultrasound is needed to confirm a pregnancy. While a pregnancy test may indicate pregnancy, only an ultrasound can tell whether the pregnancy is viable and progressing at a normal rate.
Our limited obstetric ultrasounds can provide a variety of details about the developing fetus, including gestational age, viability and the presence of a heartbeat. Gestational age refers to the age of the fetus, which is important if a woman is considering an abortion. Certain abortion procedures are dependent on gestational age.
A pregnancy is deemed viable if a heartbeat is detected and the fetal development is taking place in the uterus. If a pregnancy is developing in the fallopian tubes or elsewhere in the body, it is called an ectopic pregnancy and is a serious medical concern that must be addressed immediately.
